Home Repair and Improvement

A little bit it seems stupid to even talk about the little things we've been doing for our house ourselves while we have a crew banging away on the thing 40 hours/week. But seeing as how they're off this weekend I guess I can show you something.

Here was my project for the day:

The old side door had a mail slot. So Friday when that door went away so did our capability to receive mail. Part of me wonders what would have happened had we not had place for mail. Would we just lose our mail privileges? If so, it might not be a bad strategy.

This process made me feel like a real dope. We originally were going to relocate the thing to closer to the street. That meant fastening to concrete and so I'd bought some tapcons. Unbeknownst to me though the mailbox has a setback on the back of about 5/8 of an inch. So when I got the tapcons in, they were too short. This was, by the way after having to run home to get a Phillips bit for my screwgun, as for some reason the only bits I had with me were square head. Then Mrs. TANBI suggests we put the thing up by the door again anyway, so now I am on the siding and not on the concrete so I need normal screws, which are at the apartment again; and so I go back to the apartment the second time for 2 screws. Really, after thinking about it I came to the conclusion that it felt more like I used to in summer stock when it seemed like every five minutes I'd have to run back to the shop for something.

So what do we learn for life from this? Wherever your screw gun is you should have a Phillips bit and a handful of screws.

This was Mrs. TANBI's project...

She'd decided that she would like the railing above to be black. So yesterday in 90 degree heat she stripped of the old paint using a variety of methods, none clean or quiet. Today (again in 90 degree heat) she went back and finished off the prep and then did the painting. The painting like any true DIY project required a second trip to the home center (took more paint than we thought). Looks pretty good though:

Yes, yes, we know. We'll have someone look at that retaining wall.

SO far all the pics have been looking inward. Today was a nice day and I spent a little time just sitting in our front yard. This is what you see if you do that:

Tomorrow the pros return.

Next Up? Doors Apparently.

So the cabinet guys have disappeared for a while. They measured for the countertop and are coming back in about two weeks. We've undertaken our first project of the effort during the Memorial Day break. Mrs. TANBI is refinishing the iron railing out front. Yesterday is was brick red. Hopefully by the end of tomorrow it will be black. Today we discovered that prior to the red it had once upon a time been white, and probably started off its life green.

Prior to the holiday the drywall guys were finishing up, and the carpenters got going on our new doors. We're replacing all the exterior doors. For some reason they didn't appear to get through the listing process without becoming a little less than. We're getting new storm doors too, but we don't have them yet.

Here's the new front door:

That's with the original lockset. Eventually that will be replaced too. Then there's a new side door:

Right now that one doesn't even have a knob. So a little bit its a fancy wall panel. This door has blinds between the panels of the glass - cat safe blinds. I dare the cats to try to screw them up.

And a new back door:

This one is still in process. The back door also has the cat friendly blinds. Originally I was thinking we'd do a swinging door here, but in the end we just wound up with a new slider. It's more conducive to furniture layout - and is also more cost effective.

Speaking of cats. I didn't show the little pet garage the other day:

The pantry cabinet has a roll top door on the bottom. In all likelihood it'll be opened and stay open and we'll put the cats water fountain and dry food in there, tucked out of the way.

What else? Somewhere in the middle of this Mrs. TANBI found us someone to help out with the landscaping. They'd come by earlier to mow before we got a citation from the city. The other day they came by with a truckload of mulch:

I think the back yard is stating to come around.

Have a happy Memorial Day!

Cabinet-o-rama

So as we saw at the end of the last post the cabinet crew has been in and installing up a storm. Here's a quick trip around the room.

This is the door from the living room, and the hallway to the side door...

I've been obsessing that the peninsula was going to create too much of a pinch, but it looks like its actually going to be very nice.

Continuing counterclockwise...

This is "the business end" with the fridge, sink, dishwasher, and range within this assembly. Appliances come much later in the process (and by much later I mean in 2 or 3 weeks). I've never had a flush front cabinet over the fridge before, that seems nice. A little I wonder about that last cabinet in the corner, but I am sure we'll find a use for it.

Now, end for end...

There's the patio doors and where we'll have the kitchen table.

And completing the loop...

Those last bits there are a space for a TV and other more non-kitcheny items. We kept having stuff like that accumulate in the old kitchen with no place for them, so that should be nice.

There's also this pantry cabinet in the hallway to the side door, but it's real hard to get a camera on it...

It was kind of a found space so we decided we'd try to tie it in with the rest of the kitchen. There's a little garage down there that will ultimately (probably) turn out to be the new home of the cats' dry food and water fountain - nice and tucked out of the way.

Tomorrow the counter-top people are coming to measure.

Still Trying to Catch Up

Really I have to remember to bring the real camera to the house when I go. The phone pics are just odd sometimes and really need a flash.

When last we left our catch up story we'd boxed out some beams. Just before we went away the crew managed to box out the columns as well...

I have to say that this is boxier than I'd envisioned, but it matches the beams, and it's growing on me. Hiding there you can also see carpet samples for the upstairs. We were up there today and all the old carpet is gone. It looks much bigger. Really one of the interesting things I am learning through this process is how relative one's perception of size really is. Change the paint, pull some carpet or a wall and the whole proportion appears to change.

So, then we went away. While we were gone a drywalling army attacked. Here's the columns after...

That's sort of to the dining room from the living room through what will be the stairs. It's possible we came up with an actual plan for the stairs today. Hopefully that'll become something real for someone to work on tomorrow. This shot also shows a boarded up window, the sashes have been removed to replace the old bathroom privacy glass with plain glass.

Here's mostly the reverse view, living room from dining room...

Do you like the existing stairs? Orange fiberglass with bright aluminum treads? That's a real bold design choice I think.

Also while we were gone the drywall team started and finished the kitchen and the cabinet guys got started with their put in...

This is the interior wall of the house, opposite of where the sink, dishwasher, and range will go.

So. Moving right along.

I Am WAY Behind

I hope you've been enjoying the Twitter aggregation, considering that's all I've had to offer. We just returned from NYC and Lancaster and a whirlwind work/family/social tour. There's much to blog about I suppose, but I feel like I should try to clear a backlog of photos first.

I've had these house photos from the end of demo and the start of framing for a few days now. We actually went by the house today and it is much further along, but we should look at these anyway. (Still don't have a staircase solution BTW, so if you have a spare, or a guy...)

Pics.

Here's the overview shot with the snazzy sweep-panorama feature on the camera...

You can really see it starting to open up. They have the new paralam beams in and the structural parts of the posts installed. You're looking head on at the prior staircase landing, that had yet to be demo'd out.

Here's the living room from the kitchen door...

and then from the front door...

That plywood is over floor joists we replaced. You can also see again how they took out the whole wall between the kitchen and the living room even though we wanted to keep that one. In the end I think it worked out better for them anyway as they had to redo a bunch of mechanicals that were in that wall and having the access likely made it easier.

Here's the dining room from the front of the house (from in the old bedroom and through what was the old first floor bath)...

Another hole for replacing floor joists. The ones that were under the tub were basically gone. Here's the reverse view, looking toward the front...

Not sure if you'll see it, but there's some belly in this beam that replaced the old partition wall. The first time I asked about it, they said they'd just fir it out flat. The second time I asked they replaced the beam with one almost twice as wide. Guess being a noodge pays occasionally. You can also start to see the new front closet and powder room. Here's a better look...

We decided to turn the existing powder room 90 degrees so the door wouldn't really open directly onto the dining room. That project also gave us a place for a closet as the old one was part of the stair system we've removed.

You can see here the start on boxing out the new structural elements...

Not sure about the beefiness, but it's growing on me. The columns get the same treatment and then everything gets drywall.

And then hopefully a beautiful open stringer staircase.

Things are moving apace in the kitchen as well. Here's one mid-demo...

and here's one with demo complete and some of the new electrical installed...

We're fairly sure we're going to have a really bright kitchen, and that that is a good thing.

Next up? Drywall, cabinets; busy busy busy.

We haven't done this in a while. I am going to omit the "PTM Professional Practice" course as it was a fairly easy A. Even without that, its a fairly large list this semester, guess I need to up the standards. Here are the outstanding performers in my courses this semester:

Shannon Henley
Robert Kubisen
Hiro Miura
Sophie Mysel
Matt Rohner
Jake Rothermel
Michael Sibley
Rebecca Stoll

Seniors, Seniors...

Yeah, they don't do that anymore - or I don't go to convocation - or maybe both.

The last round of crits is usually somewhat less critical. Here they are:

Job Seeking PM/SM Nicole:

From S11Crits
Nicole ran the last third of the crazy scheme this year. Westbound. Film & TV please.

Job Seeking PM/SM Kelli:

From S11Crits
Kelli ran Showcase this year. Westbound. Film & TV please.

Job Seeking PM/SM Elize:

From S11Crits
I'm not sure what the guitar is about. She also clearly knows something about Facebook profiles I do not.

Job Having BSA TD/Math Ariel:

From S11Crits
Ariel is going to Middle America to teach Math (and inevitably become the advisor for the technical theatre classes).

Job Seeking TD/LD Matt:

From S11Crits
I have to say, Matt seemed most interested in going back to summer camp to be a cook. After that he'll talk to Auerbach or FTSI or something.

No pictured: Job Seeking PM/LD Joe, because I am brain addled and Job Having PM/SM Kevin who is already working his new APM gig in NYC.

Thesis, Spring 2011

Last but not least in the Semester Review parade are the Grad 3 Thesis presentations. My photography here could have been better.

Job Seeking PM/SM Danielle:

From S11Crits
Danielle's thesis was about the use of child performers in theatre as a guide for Production Managers and Stage Managers.

Summer Job Having PM/SM Cody:

From S11Crits
Cody's thesis was a guide to stage violence for Production Managers and Stage Managers.

Job Seeking TD Sam:

From S11Crits
Sam's thesis was an examination of all the wrong ways we manage out of balance counterweight sets. It was enlightening and depressing.

Not Pictured: Job Having TD Jimmy. Jimmy's thesis was a project thesis where he did the technical design for a national tour of Jersey Boys. He's not quite where he want's to be, so he critted last week and being completely brain dead I forgot to take a picture.

CONGRATS TO ALL THE STUDENTS! GREAT WORK! HAVE A GOOD SUMMER!

And More Semester Reviews

The weekend is over, back on your heads. Day three of jumble crits.

We'll start with Grad2 PM/SM Calvin:

From S11Crits
Calvin had Rigging, Costumes, and Electrics this semester. Fairly well rounded for grad school.

Junior PM/SM Liz:

From S11Crits
Liz demonstrates for us that perhaps black is no longer a good semester review wardrobe choice now that we have the black board covers. Sort of like a weatherman with a chroma-key green tie.

Junior PM/SM Chris:

From S11Crits
I guess I really need to figure out a way to get juniors in a class.

Grad2 TD Tom:

From S11Crits
Tom sounds like he's finally found someone to take over his long standing carnival responsibilities, which is good because next spring wants to be all about thesis.

Junior PM/SM David:

From S11Crits
Is also a junior, so I have little to say, but really drives home that black outfit message. David tried to do a show this semester without hardcopy. I should have had him talk to Ben, who always said computers and email don't make less paper, they make more.

Sophomore LX/TD Robert:

From S11Crits
Robert lamented a lack of time in the shop. We'll have to do something about that.

Sophomore PM/SM Brian:

From S11Crits
Would you look at that smile, that might be a little demented. I wonder what he was thinking.

Grad2 PM/SM Devorah:

From S11Crits
Again with the black outfit. Devorah is heading into a real busy third year, SMing the first mainstage and then thesis, thesis, and more thesis.

Last up will be seniors and grad3 thesis (although I missed the opportunity to photograph one each a senior and grad3 who reviewed early - bummer).

Semester Reviews - Day Two

Back to the Wells Studio for another day of Semester Reviews. Turns out I was a little under the weather so I had to give the keys to Joe today. I hope I rally for Monday.

First up, Junior TD Ethan:

From S11Crits
Ethan will be spending the summer hearing about every mistake I ever made at Chicago Scenic. Strangely that's an improvement, as I am sure he didn't hear a single word about me last summer at Hudson. If you've got a room or a sublet with good access to Goose Island, Ethan would like to know.

Grad1TD Dale:

From S11Crits
Dale converted what I used to think was a fairly serious assignment into a doll house for his daughter. I won't hold it against him. When he was applying to the program Dale asked about how flexible the time commitment was and I told him we'd work with him. At his review I asked how that was going and he said it's fine because he only needs like 4 hours of sleep per night. I think I would hope for more sleep. On the other hand, they are just about to have another child, so sleep might be out of the question anyway.

Junior PM/SM Hannah:

From S11Crits
It was during Hannah's crit that I really realized I don't have the juniors in any class in the spring. If you are a junior and you're not in the scheme, then you are WAY off my radar. Hannah is a junior without time in the scheme.

Sophomore PM/SM Devrie:

From S11Crits
Devrie did the most whimsical joinery project in ScenOFab - heart heart is in the wood. I spend so little time in the shop now I think if I did a joinery project my blood might be in the wood.

Grad1TD Matt:

From S11Crits
Matt s[pent a big chunk of his session talking about outside projects and working in the costume shop. Normally that'd be a red flag for me in a grad, but this time it really wasn't.

Sophomore TD Tiffany:

From S11Crits
Tiffany spent a large chunk of her session talking about outside classes and working in the prop shop. Normally that would be a red flag for me in a sophomore. I'll have to consider that. It's a lovely drop she made for the prop people.

Grad2 PM/SM Brian:

From S11Crits
When Brian finishes up here at the School of Trauma we will be making a small coffee table book from his very creative crit boards. His musical score motif scored again.

Back on our heads Monday morning fresh.
