Actors’ Equity Condemns Tennessee’s Anti-Drag Legislation

Deadline: Actors’ Equity Association has condemned Tennessee’s new legislation restricting drag performance, urging theaters in the state to “join us in rejecting it entirely and lobbying for its elimination.” The union, which represents actors and stage managers in live theater, also said it is “monitoring the progress of similarly dystopian laws in other states.”

Online Petition Calls Out School For Cancelling Play With LGBTQ+ Characters

www.broadwayworld.com: Over 4,000 signatures have been added to a change.org petition that accuses administrators of Carroll High School in Indiana of canceling a school play involving LGBTQ+ characters after receiving complaints from parents.

Variety: The oversized contribution Chicago has made and continues to make to the American entertainment landscape comes in no small part from its vibrant and varied theater scene. With well over 200 theaters, from small stages featuring intimate fare to larger houses sending major productions to Broadway and beyond, it’s difficult to find any American film or television series that doesn’t have roots that trace back to Windy City stages.

A Black theater director on dealing with cutbacks — and death threats

Datebook: In 2019, Oakland native Nataki Garrett was appointed artistic director of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, one of the most influential nonprofit theaters in the country. She became one of the country’s few Black female theater leaders, working in a town, Ashland, Ore., that’s approximately 90% white.

Broadway News: The report tracks the number of new Equity contracts and average salaries of those contracts for productions that opened between Jan. 1, 2021 and Dec. 31, 2021 in the United States. Data is organized and assessed across six identity categories — race/ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, disability and veteran status — to examine hiring biases and pay differences through the lens of these identity markers.

I'm sick of Broadway audience members acting like jackasses

nypost.com: As audiences have returned to Broadway, they have simultaneously morphed into cavemen — drinking to belligerent excess, causing loud ruckuses and, in some previously unimaginable instances, they’re even becoming violent with helpless ushers.

Ban On Drag Performances Could Prevent Broadway Tours From Coming To Tennessee

www.broadwayworld.com: Tennessee could soon be the next state unable to host tours (or licensed productions) of a number of Broadway shows following legislation that will target drag performers and the transgender community. House Bill 9 "creates an offense for a person who engages in an adult cabaret performance on public property or in a location where the adult cabaret performance could be viewed by a person who is not an adult."

Senators Blast Live Nation's "Trust Us" Responses, Call for DOJ Inquiry

www.ticketnews.com: Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Mike Lee (R-UT) issued a blistering response to Live Nation’s evasion of key questions posed during last month’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in a letter published Thursday, asking the Department of Justice to continue its ongoing investigation of Live Nation and Ticketmaster’s alleged anticompetitive conduct. The senators organized the bipartisan hearing held in January, which featured numerous witnesses outlining extensive allegations of monopolistic behavior by Live Nation Entertainment and its ticketing subsidiary, while executive Joe Berchtold attempted to deflect all blame for consumer issues in the space to ticket resale operators.
