Techdirt: We are living under a sea of AI-generated slop, where AI deepfakes and non-consensual intimate content abound. Congress, a self-interested creature, naturally wants to create protections for themselves, their favorite celebrities, and their wealthy donors against online impersonation. But until now, visions of so-called AI protections have been limited. From my lair, I’ve seen how Big Content might use congressional panic about AI abuse to make a many-tentacled power grab. With the NO FAKES and No AI FRAUD Acts, it’s delicious to report that we have done exactly that.

Filmmakers Are Worried About AI. Big Tech Wants Them to See ‘What's Possible’

WIRED: When Hollywood’s writers and actors went on strike last year, it was, in part, because of AI. Actors didn’t care for the notion that their likenesses could be used without their permission, whether by the studios that hired them that week or by someone at home with a computer in 2040. Writers didn’t want to do punch-ups on potentially crummy AI scripts or have their words (or ideas) cannibalized by large language models that didn’t pay them a dime.

IATSE: When Trey Parker and Matt Stone purchased Casa Bonita, they described the attraction as “the Disneyland of Restaurants” with “Broadway quality entertainment.” Now, the workers who provide that entertainment are organizing with the same labor unions that represent onstage and backstage talent at Disneyland and on Broadway – IATSE and Actors’ Equity Association.

You’re simply told one day that you’ve won, say, up to $550,000, in the case of the Doris Duke Artist Award, or $800,000, in the case of the MacArthur “genius grant.” And those two grants are almost entirely unrestricted, meaning that after paying taxes on the money, artists can do whatever they want with it, personal or artistic—buy a house, fund a new piece, pay off debts, grow their company.

'Development is Wage Theft': Pilot Season Death Morphs Into Year-Round Hell

theankler.com: The idea of pilot season is an old-fashioned one. Used to be that TV writers would spend the late spring and summer developing ideas, pitch in August or September, write scripts through the fall after getting a pilot script order, then turn them in so that executives could read those scripts on their flights to the East Coast for the holidays. Come January, you’d know whether that pilot was getting shot and by May whether you’d have a series on the air in the fall. By the end of upfronts in May, the cycle would start all over again.

Survey Shows Chicago Small Arts Sector Thriving

AMERICAN THEATRE: The Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation (GDDF) announced the results of its new Chicago Small Arts Sector Survey of 77 small arts organizations based in the Chicago region. These organizations span artistic genres, including theatre, dance, music, visual art, museums, and literary and multidisciplinary organizations. All survey participants have annual operating budgets under $1 million, with 73% reporting an annual budget of $500,000 or less. The survey was conducted from August to September 2024.

AMT Lab @ CMU: As exemplified by the Hollywood strikes of 2023, we find ourselves in a new era of Artificial Intelligence in film and television. While studios are looking to cut costs, performers seek job security, and consumers seek quality content. Through research conducted in collaboration with facial motion capture technology provider Faceware Technologies Inc., Master of Entertainment Industry Management students at Carnegie Mellon sought to gain insight on how AI-generated content will transform existing industries, including how this technology could affect employment in the entertainment industry, content development, budgets, contracts, legislation, and privacy rights.
