Buyer Beware

Does anyone out there know anything about this device?

On the one hand it sounds like a really good idea. On the other hand it seems like it could just be an ethernet pass through device and who would be the wiser.

Perhaps I am too cynical for such purchases.

To me, it looks like a pretty normal firewall (probably built upon some of the F/OSS firewalls out there-- that is, running embedded Linux with ipTables and a DHCP server), probably built on some OEM board with a handful of Ethernet ports.

Their website is fluff-heavy, which is unfortunate.

Their website talks about 3 technologies:

AlphaGAP sounds pretty cool, but is really just automatic port closing upon inactivity. I don't know for certain, but most firewalls could be configured to do this. And almost isn't required-- if you aren't initiating any connections, most firewalls won't permit connections to you.

From the way they are describing it, it sounds like they might be doing some bizarre actual physical disconnection of your ethernet port if you're not doing anything. Since the firewall would have to be compromized for data to get to you, there's no reason compromizing the firewall wouldn't allow you to reconnect an ethernet port.

Stealth IP sounds like normal NAT behavior (any router does this).

RPA also describes a normal NAT.

I'd just go buy a Cheap router from a reputable company.

I was thinking, doesn't a normal router do that?!

You just need to remove the glaze off the eyes to understand the router's interface to close inactive ports.

But since most people have mental blocks against doing stuff like that, this is a perfect gift!!
