To maximize the iPhone battery, turn off 3G which is on by default. (Settings>General>Network>Enable 3G) Internet speed will drop if you don't have a Wi-Fi connection.

Other things that help include, Bluetooth Off, Wi-Fi Off, turn down the Brightness when using the screen.

3G Off alone will get you a full 1 to 2 days. Charge daily for 2-3 hours if possible.
