Ellipses...

So I am totally upset about the whole birth certificate thing, except yesterday it occurred to me that it has nothing to do with the birth certificate... I've become quite adept at using "they" to neuter "he" or "she." Too bad it isn't real English... I am ready for the next round of Bulls games... Still having trouble with "passed" and "past." It's a stupid problem for someone that's been around as long as I have... Too bad about the Pens. Always next year (says the Cub fan)... Can't tell if I want to add this new scifi series on TNT. I've got a lot of TV already... Last night I had the thought that I am getting really old really fast... That was one big tornado... Did he say Jake reeks of pot? Say it ain't so Jake. Everyone is pulling for you, don't fall apart... Not going to be watching the royal wedding. Didn't watch the last few, not going to watch this one... All the theses that are going to be finished are finished. I wish I could say 3 out of four ain't bad... NFL Draft was tonight. Didn't impact my life at all as far as I know... Every time we leave the windows open it gets really really cold... You would not believe the pile of grading I have to do... I waited and waited today for someone to throw with, but nobody showed... Getting really tough to work on next year with the things for the end of this year pushing so hard... I think for the first year in several I am going to go to the NYC cocktail... I think I would like a personal chef to feed me and keep me under 2000 calories per day while still meeting my cravings. Nice fantasy episode Top Chef Masters... There is one day of class remaining. That was quick... Shavy is having a real good time with his new look. Like a different cat... Our house project may have backslid a little, but the work seems worth while. Just got to keep an eye on the dollars... Seriously considering dumping all instant messaging. I think I'm down to three people I chat with... Today I emailed a student and used the phrase "catastrophic failure" because something they did broke. In hindsite it might not have been the best language for teacher to student communication...

Worth a Look

Here are a few posts from last week's Greenpage that might be worth your time:

Inspector General Released

Glorious Wreckage: "My playwriting mentor Dennis Reardon once wrote that adaptors are like the Rosie Ruizes of playwriting. Rosie Ruiz, you may recall, was that marathon runner who entered the 1980 Boston Marathon from a crowd of spectators half a mile from the finish line and then claimed to have run the whole thing, setting all kinds of world records.

The Creativity Killer: Group Discussions

The Atlantic: "Creative collaboration requires disciplined teamwork. And this kind of teamwork requires knowing when not to work in teams. This sounds obvious, but we constantly struggle with the belief that we must be inclusive to succeed. When to diverge and when to converge: that is the question.

Michael Murphy discusses plans for tuition

The Tartan Online: "Carnegie Mellon will raise tuition by 4 percent for incoming students and 3 percent for returning students for the Fall 2011 semester. Housing and dining rates will also be increased by 3.97 percent and 2.47 percent, respectively. The total cost of attendance is expected to rise by 4.24 percent for new students and 3.45 percent for current students.

Energy Independence Act of 2007 – Clarification

Backstage at BackstageJobs.com: "Here is what is being phased out between the years of 2012 and 2014: Incandescent bulbs that produce 310 – 2600 lumens of light. In general, this means bulbs less than 40W or more than 150W. However, check your favorite bulb’s packaging to see if you’re affected. If you’re favorite bulb’s packaging doesn’t indicate lumens, find another brand. There are exceptions; appliance lamps (stupid exception), “rough service” (whatever that means), 3 way bulbs (Who still has these?) colored lamps (your Spencer’s cheap “blacklight” bulbs are spared) and plant lights (no comment).

Why Christopher Nolan is taking Batman to the rustbelt

guardian.co.uk: "Underneath the gritty charm depicted in productions such as Wonder Boys, Flashdance, and the American version of Queer as Folk, there's also the lurking fear contained in the work of the city's best-known director, George A Romero, whose locally shot films include Night of the Living Dead and Martin, about a Pittsburgh-area grocery bag boy convinced that he is a vampire.

Shavy Crockett

When the summer comes our cat Bra'Tac undergoes a transformation into Shavy Crockett:

From There are no bad ideas

He really seems to like it. His sister Freya, she doesn't like it too much. We think it's because it comes with a shampoo and she can't tell who he is anymore. Eventually she gets used to it.

For him it's more than just a surface transformation. He really becomes a totally different cat, much more personable.

Why do we do such a thing? There's something to be said that nobody wants to wear a fur coat all through the summer. But really the issue is that he's such a long hair cat that he gets so matted that we can't brush them out anymore. The only remaining way to deal with it is to go to the clippers.

Plus it's real cute.

Worth a Look

Here are a few posts from last week's Greenpage that might be worth your time:

Supply and Demand, or Risk vs. Reward?

Art Works: "There are many things I want to talk about. I want to talk about reactions to the #SupplyDemand conversation, how we frame our conversation and debate, the sense of balance in the theater, and many others. I thought I would write about what is on my mind right now: failure.

Sitting Can Literally Kill You

The Consumerist: "If you've ever worried that you were slowly dying by spending your days trapped in cubicle-land, you don't have to worry anymore. You're right. And according to new research, the threat isn't merely existential. Sitting for long periods of time set off a chain reaction of events that quicken your shuffle off this mortal coil.

Broadway's 'Fela!' Cast Performs for Nigerian Fans

Backstage: "The Broadway cast of 'Fela' introduced Afrobeat superstar Fela Anikulapo-Kuti to hundreds of thousands of new American fans. Now the show's stars are facing their toughest critics yet: Nigerians in this megacity who know his lyrics by heart and consider him a national icon.

The World's Creepiest Opera Is Under Construction

Gizmodo: "An Austrian production of French Revolutionary opera ‘Andre Chenier' is set to start in July, on the banks of beautiful Lake Constance. Not quite so beautiful is the eery, incomplete, massive human torso (with 49-foot head) that provides the stage.

You make the call: would you take the group and change your show?

Ken Davenport - The Producer's Perspective: "As a Producer you may be faced with tough decisions all the time. You'll have artists who want to add more scenery to a scene that you know won't result in more ticket sales . . . but you'll want to do it, because it will make the show's statement stronger. You'll have marketers that want your star to appear on Howard Stern . . . even though your star hates Howard like Lindsay Lohan hates paying for expensive jewelry. And you'll want your star to do it because maybe Howard reaches an audience that is right for your show. Or . . . you'll be faced with the real-life decision that came across our desk here at DTE last week.

And the Work Continues

We're making significant progress through the demolition. Actually, if you pay close attention to the photo below you'll notice they actually demo'd out a little too much, stripping the sheetrock off the living room wall - oops. Still, I guess as far as mistakes go that's not a bad one. Plus it gives us a moment to reconsider (and reinforce the decision) regarding an open kitchen.

From There are no bad ideas
Here's the current state of the living room. When they opened the ceiling they found there was an entirely redundant joist system. I guess the old ceiling joists weren't enough to carry the new floor but rather than take them out they just left them. Now they're coming out and we'll pick up a couple inches of height,

From There are no bad ideas
Now we can start to see the size of the space on the dining room side of the house. This is with the old bathroom removed so you can see clear through to the front (and the old "paneling room"). We were expecting to have to have a bump out against the far wall here to carry mechanicals, but after the demo it looks like there's a cavity in the wall after all, so no pilaster necessary. That hole was under the old tub. Goes right into the garage, basically no floor joists.

From There are no bad ideas
This is sort of the "new" elevation; from inside the old front bedroom looking back into what I guess is sort of a great room. Even though it looks smaller and smaller the more we take out, I do think I am getting an idea of the overall scale. I think it's going to come out real nice.

From There are no bad ideas
Last "quadrant" so to speak, front door passed the stairs.

From There are no bad ideas
The kitchen looks real different.

From There are no bad ideas

Having that whole wall opened up is pretty cool. You can see where the original structure was. there were two windows, or maybe a window and a sliding door. And you can see the difference in building materials from the 50's to the 90's. There's a real difference even in plain 2x4. One of the builders today told me for doing new construction on a bath or a kitchen he doesn't use regular 2x4s anymore but rather all that framing lumber is engineered wood. Much more reliably straight and stable. Learn something new every day.

Ellipses...

All the home project shopping is a real steep hill... The reviews for The Alice Project are coming out. Here's hoping its the greatest thing in American Theatre... I really am having difficulty telling what day of the week it is, or what month. Last week I had to ask what year it was... I am TOTALLY digging on the new monitor. Everyone should go out and get one of their own. Inkeeper! Fresh horses and 24" monitors for all the men... Its the time of the year when Mrs TANBI hides all the food... I don't think tea partiers that get elected to office can continue to call the government "them" or "they." When you are the man the adjective is "we." as in "We can't be trusted with your money" not "They can't be trusted with our money." You are part of the problem now, try to be part of the solution... That was too long for an ellipses post... Why oh why would someone pay $7 per square when just down the road you could pay $4 or $3? Makes no sense to me... The local news got a finger wag today from CNN. Thanks for noticing us CNN... Another weekend without the movies. I wonder what happened to the movies? Someday we'll have to go back to the movies... No real home seder for the TANBI's this year - something to do with our home being a pile of rubble... When I run a flooring store, I am going to make the floor out of large samples and do away with the small sample boards. Although it is likely I will never run a flooring store... I am also TOTALLY digging my new keyboard... It might be time to investigate getting a bike... Why is war preferable to assassination when the leaders are normally the problem? Some kind of nod to aristocracy? Maybe we've had it wrong for a very long time... What would need to happen for AIM to make a real resurgence? I almost feel like it's time to uninstall it... Firefox got so bogged down the other day I actually found myself wondering if the machine I was on had chrome... Today someone suggested Google buy the recording industry. I'd like to suggest Google buy the petroleum industry... Trying to decide if I should just chuck everything and spend the next week on the Bulls and the Pens. THere are worse things a guy could do...

Carnival 2011

Carnival is winding down and in a first because of work, weather, the new house, and whatever I didn't even make it across the street. I wouldn't have thought that would ever happen.

In other news they had to cancel buggy finals because of rain. Could you imagine being a senior and having the race canceled. That would be unfortunate.

So it looks like I will have to be content with my carnival involvement being a few less than exciting meetings about booth safety. Maybe I'll do better next year.

And They're Off

And by they I mean the carpet...

And some of the walls...

And a good chunk of ceiling...

In an exact opposite of the old "hurry up and wait" concept we've very suddenly and abruptly begun the renovations on our house after months of trying to line things up. There was a dumpster in the driveway, and email form the contractor, and a nice note in sharpie on a wall I guess we will now be painting (maybe we'll get a photo of the tomorrow for posterity).

I think you can already see some of the openness we're trying to create. That's a good thing. Be a shame to take the walls down and then think "oh it was so much nicer before."

Interestingly I do think taking up the carpet has made the living room feel smaller. I wouldn't have thought changing the flooring could do that. Hopefully as it is finished out it will regain some of the perceived volume.

While that was happening Mrs. TANBI and I went to the local flooring emporium and - I think - made decisions on the living room floor, kitchen floor, replacement carpet, and fireplace wall cladding. Writing it out like that makes it feel like much a less formidable thing than it was.

Big fun. Watch this space for updates.

Worth a Look

Here are some posts from the past week's Greenpage that might be worth your time:

So Hyun Chung Wins 2011 USITT Scene Design Award sponsored by Rose Brand

Stage Directions: "So Hyun Chung, a graduate student at Carnegie Mellon University, received the USITT Scene Design Award sponsored by Rose Brand, during the 2011 USITT Awards for Young Designers & Technicians in the Performing Arts process. Roger Claman of Rose Brand presented the award as part of the 51st Annual Conference. Her work was nominated by Anne Mundell of the Carnegie Mellon University faculty.

Behind the scenes, behind bars

plainKate: "I used to imagine that incarcerated actors would have no schedule conflicts. That they would be available to rehearse at any time. That they don’t have anything else to do. I was as wrong as I could be. I marvel at how busy the men who participate in Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA) are: they all have their work assignments, scattered throughout the prison, as law library clerks, gallery porters, chow hall workers, plumbers, recreational aides; many of them are in school, whether it is the pre-college, college or master’s programs; there are advocacy and counseling, mentoring and study groups; there are those wonderful, all-too-short-yet-sacrosanct visits with family and friends.

UNCSA’s Production of Oklahoma! Gets Web-Series

Stage Directions: "The Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts and No Rules Production Company are launching a new web series to coincide with the opening of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts’ (UNCSA) all-school musical Oklahoma! The 8-episode series premiered Friday, April 1 when the first episode went up on the UNCSA website at www.uncsa.edu. Seven more episodes will be presented on the website each subsequent week until the end of the show in May.

Stage sisterhood: Women in Seattle are running the show

Seattle Times Newspaper: "You may not know it, but a quiet revolution (or is it an evolution?) has been unfolding in Seattle theater. On stages and in rehearsal halls, more and more women directors are running the show — and, in many cases, the theater too.

The Ultimate Summer Study Abroad Program

College Candy: "So, school is coming to an end soon. That’s good, right? Yes…and no. On the one hand, you’re done with paper-writing for a few months. Hollaaaa! On the other hand, you still need to figure out what you’re going to do this summer. Job? Internship? Job and internship?
Yeah, that sounds fun. Not. The good news is, those aren’t your only options. What about studying abroad? Even better, what about studying abroad in the Galapagos Islands?

Pae White Uses Computer-Assisted Loom To Weave Opera Curtain Of Scanned Images Of Aluminum Foil

FEELguide: "Pae White is the artist responsible for the best damn stage curtain of any damn opera house in the whole damn world. Hot damn. For the main stage curtain of the Oslo Opera House, the L.A.-based artist scanned images of crumpled aluminum foil and sent the scans through a computer numerically-controlled loom which transformed the pixels into a massive tapestry of cotton, wool, and polyester.

Ellipses...

This phone thing is really irritating. I bought a new keyboard and monitor this week, maybe I need to add phone to that list... As much as the policy riders offended me, saying they weren't about spending is disingenuous. Just "what on" instead of "how much" - still spending... Would it really be all that useful to check in at the barber with my phone? Of course it would... I guess we get to go through all this financial hostage holding again when the debt ceiling comes up... Today I thought about shaving the cat myself, but I couldn't catch him... By the way, nice job example setting for my students you government types, nothing like waiting until the last possible second. At least they didn't get all state legislature-like and "stop the clock" when they ran out of time... Saw a lovely 8 year old girl in a Rothlesberger jersey today, something about that is just wrong... Lest you missed the news, the Legislator that said 90% of Planned Parenthood's business was abortion said he wasn't serious. His insincerity might have been a little too subtle for most... Really I ought to call my sister... I don't believe Trump really believes Obama isn't a citizen. He's a player and he's fucking with all of us... The tax guy told me I was "all done" with my dad's taxes, good thing I opened that envelope... It's amazing to me how little bandwidth our media has. The showdown totally drowned out events in the mid-East and in Japan. We could be better at seeing the world. It's just not about what happens to be loudest at the moment... How do I get my friend Bonnie to run for Senate in Nevada? It feels like such a good idea... Good parking karma today after a few lousy days. Not expecting things to be too great in that vein at CMU this week... "Vouchers" is another word for "give a significant portion of the funds to business" don't be fooled... They changed the rules at some point and now you can't move a piece onto Midway that takes more than 6 people to carry. They lost something with that... Gas prices are at a record high, and it has nothing to do with people buying cars in China and India and everything to do with people gambling on necessary resources... Another weekend without going to the movies, although we did catch Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs on video... I'm really not getting much closer to completing my FMEA presentation. Hopefully I won't have to go to the extremes Matt did with his splicing presentation... I'm going to have to look into running Acad on a Mac. Something I've avoided for more than a decade... Added a slideshow to the sidebar of the blog but I wish the pictures were bigger, gonna have to look at the actual code. Should change those traffic pictures too since I moved a while ago... Drove by the new BW3 in Monroeville the other night and it was MOBBED. Who knew moving across the street would have that effect? I guess maybe they did... Adding phone to my list is what the man wants, isn't it? Can't have that...

Worth a Look

Here are a few posts from last week's Greenpage that might be worth a look:

Defending the Invalid

ATW: "A few times in the past week, I have encountered several people who, unprompted, expressed to me their concern for the future of theatre. I am not sure what prompted this confluence of empathy, but I chose primarily to listen to their dissertations on why theatre was in trouble and why they were worried.

Bill James, Solid Fool's Gold: Why can we develop athletes and not writers?

Slate Magazine: "The population of Topeka, Kan., today is roughly the same as the population of London in the time of Shakespeare, and the population of Kansas now is not that much lower than the population of England at that time. London at the time of Shakespeare had not only Shakespeare—whoever he was—but also Christopher Marlowe, Francis Bacon, Ben Jonson, and various other men of letters who are still read today. I doubt that Topeka today has quite the same collection of distinguished writers.
Why is this?

Point Park to honor theater cheerleader Richard E. Rauh

Post Gazette: "Asked for an anecdote about Richard E. Rauh, Ron Lindblom volunteers 'the perfect Richard story.'
In 1998, Mr. Lindblom was interviewing for a job at Point Park and the first thing he did was go to the home of the university's Conservatory of Performing Arts, the Pittsburgh Playhouse in Oakland, where he saw Mr. Rauh performing in Samuel Beckett's one-man show, 'Krapp's Last Tape.'
'He was wonderful in it,' recalls the associate vice president and artistic director of the conservatory. 'Then it was a year later, and Richard and I were talking about seeing 'Krapp's Last Tape,' and he said, 'Yeah, but I noticed that you didn't stand up at the end.' So when we rededicated the Playhouse theater that became the Rauh Theater, I made sure I said, 'Richard, I'm standing for this one.' '
It's just like Richard Rauh to make a point, even if someone's trying to pay him a compliment.

TEDxCMU Sunday

Carnegie Mellon University: "Nine Carnegie Mellon students representing 11 majors will host the second annual TEDxCMU conference Sunday, April 3 in the University Center’s McConomy Auditorium. Speakers will explore the theme “ImPossible” by discussing challenges in their lives and how they turn them into opportunity.

City moving ahead on streetlight improvements

Post Gazette: "Pittsburgh City Council today moved forward with a project to set new lighting standards and overhaul the city's streetlights.
Council gave preliminary approval to the city's first-ever lighting code, which Councilman Bill Peduto said will set technical specifications for streetlights and bring equity in lighting to city business districts and neighborhoods.
